Amino acids
Aspartate
Amino acids are products applied in various sectors, including the pharmaceutical, food, chemical, and cosmetics industries. L-aspartate is an amino acid primarily used in the production of aspartame and biodegradable polymers. Its production via fermentation is still underexplored, but the growing demand has driven the development of new production processes.
Within the context of biorefineries, our laboratory has initiated the construction of genetically modified Escherichia coli strains to convert sugars derived from sugarcane bagasse into L-aspartate. In addition to making microbial cells more efficient in utilizing biorefinery by-products, metabolic engineering techniques are being employed to design strains with an enhanced capacity to produce and accumulate this amino acid.
